MAKISU III

Walk with us to the sunny side of sushi

It’s not a secret, Makisu has a healthy obsession with sushi… Their founders literally travelled across the globe to find the most flavorful & awesome recipes to put the sunshine into the sushi experience (it’s a hard job, but somebody’s got to do it…).

On this project, ncbham worked with the client from the beginning in order not only to create a unique look & feel for the Makisu restaurants but also to develop their complete brand identity.

The starting point of the reflexion was to blend traditional Japan and modern California, which was translated by figuratively wrapping up the spaces in an architectural bamboo rolling mat (makis), while fresh colours on the wall, graphics and upholstery reminded the guests of the everlastingly sunny California.

The old and the new, animism and hedonism: the collective and essentialist traits of Japan met the individual and joyful eccentricity of California in a cozy environment where one experiences curiosity and wonder.

Offering a stellar sushi experience, Makisu soon opened a second and a third restaurant. ncbham, as a privileged partner, kept on blending traditional Japan and modern California, introducing a light Pacific Ocean breeze.

Computational design and construction techniques were used to create a fully organic wooden envelope.
